The Day I Broke My Disney Movies…On Purpose

The day I broke my Disney movies…on purpose

There are many things in life now days that can consume our time and focus. They can be good things, or they can be bad things. Each decision we make on a daily basis can influence the way we think, act, and live. It took me some time to realize that some of the things we watch and allow ourselves to be a part of can really determine whether we are for God or not. I will speak from a religious stand point because it is something I believe in wholeheartedly.

So there I was, sitting in my living room, breaking half of all my Disney movies and throwing them away. Sounds crazy, I know, and I’m pretty sure my cat’s thought the same as they watched me put pieces of the broken DVD’s in a trash bag. I, like many others, have always loved Disney movies and stories. Like most girls, I loved the idea of finding my very own prince charming ( I’m blessed to say I really did ). The stories seemed harmless and fun. I must mention that as a young child, my parents were amazing and always very cautious of what I watched. I grew up not watching Disney movies, not owning my first movie until the age of around 12. I had seen a few at a friends house and always secretly loved them. I was always however, well aware that they were make believe stories, not real life, and I was warned by my parents of many of the negative aspects of these movies such as, magic, devils, witches, hypnotism and such related things. I am so grateful to my parents for guarding me from many of these elements, and because of it I was not as influenced by a lot of what many children are today.

Now as an adult, having watched some of the movies again, certain elements in them have made me more uncomfortable than before. In studying the Bible more I have come to realize that all things related to witchcraft, magic, talking spirits, communication with the dead, hypnotism, and voodoo, are not from God. I became convicted that even having them in my home was something I shouldn’t do. Hence, the breaking of the Disney DVD’s. I don’t want the Devil to have any way to reach me, and for me it means no movies, music, or even objects that represent any of it.

Sadly though, many of these elements are in every Disney movie, and also in many TV programs, movies, and media. A few documentaries by Little Light Ministries, a film company, called “ Magic Kingdom” & “ Pseudology” really showed me the dangers in many of these movies, and grabbed my attention in a big way. The underlying tones in these movies, not only Disney, but the very popular Superman, Batman, superhero movies, and Harry Potter, etc are not things that uplift God and His word. In fact, they promote things that are very harmful and down right offensive to God. Many times, I have justified watching some of these movies with the thought that I know them to be untrue and they are just for entertainment. However, whatever we place before our eyes, ears, and mind, are the things which we will retain and become a part of who we are. “ By beholding we become changed” is a thought that has rung true to me in a big way recently.

I love God, and I believe He has a plan for each and every one of our lives. I believe we have been called to stand apart and be different. This world is not our permanent home. We are to aspire much higher than what this world has to offer. It’s hard to be different. I’ll be the first one to admit. It’s awkward to be called out and asked “Why don’t you do this, or watch this?” But know, it’s ok to be different. People will respect you for it, and if they don’t, they are not worth your time, nor do they appreciate you for who you are.

My challenge to you is this. Be careful with what you watch. Guard your mind. Don’t just watch anything or listen to anything. Be purposeful in your actions and life. Keep God first and foremost above anything else. Let nothing come between your relationship with you and God. If you are watching something and you start to feel uncomfortable, that is God speaking to you, turn it off. Do not let the Devil win over your heart. Even when it comes to something that seems as harmless as a Disney movie. Do what God is calling you to do today, don’t wait until tomorrow. “ Choose you this day whom you will serve” Joshua 24:15.
